A wholly singular object. The exterior is a natural oval shell, warm honey amber, cream and pale rose, its surface luminous with natural iridescence, fitted as a hinged calling card wallet with ornate cast brass mounts, worked in scrollwork and foliate detail at the hinge points. Open it, and the interior reveals something entirely unexpected: a full structure, multiple compartments folding out to receive calling cards, visiting cards. The hinge is fully functional.

Collector's note: Shell calling card cases — particularly those with elaborate interior fittings — occupy a rare and beloved corner of the Victorian accessories market. Card cases were made of all kinds of materials including mother-of-pearl, abalone, tortoiseshell and silver. The combination of organic beauty, fine craft, and social function makes this one of the most layered objects in the collection.
