Brass Mussel Shell Paperclip
Description
Brass Mussel Shell Paperclip / Desk Clip Cast brass / hinged bivalve form / naturally oxidised patina / mid 20th century / curated for the desk and library
A miniature paperclip or document clip cast in the precise form of a mussel shell, in warm brass with a deep, naturally oxidised patina ranging from dark bronze to golden highlights along the ridges. The two halves, upper and lower valve, are hinged at the pointed tip and open with a satisfying spring tension to grip papers, letters, or correspondence before closing flush. The surface detail is exceptional: fine concentric growth lines rendered with sculptural accuracy across both valves, true to the form of Mytilus — the common mussel found on every French Atlantic and Mediterranean coast. An object that performs its function beautifully while belonging equally in a natural history cabinet.Approximate decade: Mid-century French or continental
Collector's note: Naturalist form brass desk accessories; paperclips, letter openers, and inkwells cast as shells, animals, and botanical forms were a refined staple of the mid-century French and Italian bureau. The mussel shell is a particularly elegant choice: sleek, aerodynamic, and deeply coastal in character, with strong resonance in French marine and decorative tradition.
No special care required. Polish gently with a soft brass cloth if desired, though the patina is the point.
