Mother-of-Pearl Caviar Spoon
Description
Mother-of-Pearl Caviar / Salt Spoon with Natural Shell Handle Hand-carved mother-of-pearl / natural shell handle with turban shell finial / curated for the table and dressing table
A small caviar or salt spoon carved entirely from mother-of-pearl, the oval bowl worked from a single piece of warm iridescent nacre in cream, gold, and faint green tones. The handle is formed from a section of natural shell in warm honey tones, joined seamlessly to the bowl, and terminates in a small turban or top shell finial, a naturally occurring spiral form mounted at the tip. The whole piece has a handmade, slightly irregular quality that speaks to careful artisan work rather than industrial production.
Collector's note: Mother-of-pearl caviar and salt spoons were a luxury accessory of the well-appointed Victorian and Edwardian table, used specifically because pearl does not react with salt or caviar as metal does. This example with its natural shell handle and turban finial has an especially strong naturalist character. Equally beautiful in use or on a vanity tray.
Hand wash only. Do not submerge.
