Each fitted with a silver-tone metal cap that hinges open on a small loop handle to reveal a pierced mother-of-pearl top for dispensing. The two holes identify the salt; three the pepper. Collector's note: Mother-of-pearl table accessories were a luxury of the Victorian and Edwardian dining table, prized for their beauty and for the practical reason that pearl, unlike metal, does not react with salt or acidic foods. A rare and beautiful pair in excellent functional condition.
